5 Signs Your Car Needs a Service Before Summer
Auckland summers mean road trips, beach runs, and long hot days stuck in traffic on the motorway. Your car works harder in summer than almost any other time of year — and if something is already marginal, the heat will find it.
Here are five warning signs that your car needs attention before the warm weather arrives.
1. Your Battery Is Sluggish on Start-Up
If your engine cranks slowly when you turn the key — especially in the morning — your battery is telling you something. Batteries that are borderline in winter often fail completely in summer. Heat accelerates internal degradation, and a battery that barely got you through June may not survive January.
What to do: Get a battery load test. It takes five minutes and tells you exactly how much life is left. If it's marginal, replace it now rather than being stranded at the beach or on the side of SH1.

2. Your Cooling System Hasn't Been Checked in Years
The cooling system is what stops your engine from overheating — and summer is when it works hardest. Old coolant loses its protective properties. Cracked hoses can burst under pressure. A failing thermostat can cause temperature spikes in traffic.
What to check: * Coolant level and colour (it should be clean, not brown or oily) * Radiator hoses for cracks or soft spots * Radiator cap seal * Cooling fan operation (does it kick in when idle?)
What to do: Book a cooling system check as part of your next service. If the coolant hasn't been flushed in three or more years, it's overdue.
3. Your Brakes Are Making Noise or Vibrating
Squealing, grinding, or a pulsing brake pedal are all signs that your brakes need attention. Summer driving often involves longer distances, higher speeds, and more heat — all of which stress your braking system.
What to listen for: * High-pitched squeal on braking — wear indicator is contacting the rotor * Grinding noise — pad is worn through to metal, rotor damage is happening now * Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel — warped rotors from overheating

4. You're Seeing Fluid Spots Under the Car
If you park on a clean surface and notice spots or puddles underneath, something is leaking. Common summer-related leaks include:
- **Coolant** (green, orange, or pink fluid) — cooling system leak
- **Oil** (dark brown/black) — engine gasket or seal failure
- **Transmission fluid** (red/brown) — transmission seal leak
- **Power steering fluid** — often triggered by increased steering effort in hot weather
- **Air conditioning condensation** (clear water) — this one is actually normal
What to do: Note the colour and position of the leak (front, middle, rear) and call us. Most leaks can be diagnosed and repaired on site.
5. Your Dashboard Has a Warning Light On
Any persistent warning light — check engine, ABS, airbag, battery, temperature — should be investigated before you head into summer driving. Warning lights are your car telling you something is out of spec. Ignoring them through winter doesn't make them go away.
