How Often Should You Service Your Car? A Guide for NZ Conditions

Prevention is Cheaper Than Cure

We all know we *should* service our cars, but life gets busy. Is it really that bad if you go a few months over? The short answer: Yes.

New Zealand conditions are actually classified as "severe" by many vehicle manufacturers. Our stop-start traffic in Auckland, hilly terrain, and variable weather put extra stress on engines and fluids.

The General Rule: 10,000km or 12 Months For most petrol vehicles in NZ, the golden rule is every **10,000km** or **every 12 months**, whichever comes first. Even if you only drive 2,000km a year, oil degrades over time due to condensation and oxidation.

Why Oil Changes Matter Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. It lubricates, cools, and cleans. * **Over time:** Oil breaks down and becomes sludge. * **The risk:** Sludge blocks oil galleries. Metal rubs on metal. The result is premature engine wear or catastrophic seizure. * **Cost comparison:** A $200 service vs. a $4,000 engine replacement. It's a no-brainer.

Service Levels Explained

1. Basic Service (The "Oil and Filter") * **Best for:** In-between checks for high-mileage drivers. * **Includes:** Engine oil change, oil filter replacement, and a visual safety check.

2. Standard / Silver Service (Recommended Annual) * **Best for:** The yearly maintenance for most cars. * **Includes:** All basic items + air filter check, fluid top-ups (brake, power steering, coolant), tyre rotation, and a comprehensive safety inspection (brakes, suspension, lights).

3. Premium / Gold Service * **Best for:** Every 2-3 years or major mileage milestones (e.g., 100,000km). * **Includes:** All standard items + spark plugs, fuel filter, cabin air filter, and often brake fluid flush or coolant flush.

Don't Forget the Cam Belt! If your car has a rubber cambelt (timing belt), it MUST be changed at the manufacturer's interval (often 100,000km or 5-7 years). If this snaps, your engine is often toast immediately.
