Surviving a Motorway Breakdown
The Southern Motorway (State Highway 1) is Auckland's busiest arterial route. Breaking down here is stressful and dangerous. If your car loses power, suffers a flat tire, or overheats, your priority must be safety.
Step-by-Step Survival Guide
1. Indicate and Coast to the Left The moment you feel a loss of power or hear a concerning noise, turn on your left indicator and maneuver to the left emergency shoulder as smoothly as possible. Do not brake harshly.
2. Turn on Hazard Lights Once stopped, immediately activate your hazard lights to warn approaching drivers. If it is dark or raining, keep your headlights on.
3. Exit the Vehicle Safely **Never exit the vehicle on the right side facing traffic.** Always exit through the passenger side doors. If you have passengers, ensure they exit on the left as well.
4. Get Behind the Barrier Move away from the vehicle and stand behind the safety barrier or up on the grass verge. Never wait inside the car or stand in front of it. A high-speed rear-end collision could be fatal.
5. Call for Help Assess the situation. * **If your car is blocking a live lane:** Call 111 immediately. The police will dispatch traffic management to protect you. * **If you are safely on the shoulder:** Call your roadside assistance provider or an emergency mobile mechanic.
